The Challenge
The Sixth Street Viaduct is the largest bridge project in Los Angeles' history: a $588 million, 3,500 ft span replacing the 1932 viaduct, opened on 10 July 2022 with 10 ft bike lanes in both directions. Those lanes needed physical protection from traffic on a brand-new concrete deck, with units that attach quickly and securely to the surface, meet local requirements, carry a US-specification delineator post, and can be removed and redeployed as the scheme evolves.
The Solution
In 2021, traffic safety specialists US Reflector Co. worked with Rosehill Highways to develop a bespoke lane divider for the project, branded StarCurb by US Reflector Co. for the US market. Each unit is solid rubber, moulded in the UK using our cold-cure process from 100% recycled tyre rubber bonded with Rosehill Polymers' polyurethane binder. The low, tapered profile is surface-fixed to the deck and carries a delineator post, and because it is fixed rather than cast in, it can be lifted and reused. Rosehill supplied 930 units for the viaduct.
Results
- Both bike lanes on the viaduct protected by the dividers since the bridge opened in July 2022
- Units can be lifted and redeployed as the scheme evolves, extending their service life
- A bespoke profile delivered to a US specification, designed and manufactured to local requirements
- A lower-carbon alternative to traditional materials, made from 100% recycled tyre rubber
