Project Overview

Vehicles regularly exceed the speed limit on the busy Northern Blvd in Queens. Cyclists feel unsafe when using the roads, and incidents are common. NYC is committed to creating an integrated and mobile community where cyclists feel safe.

The Challenge

  • Vehicles regularly exceed the speed limit on the busy Northern Blvd in Queens
  • Cyclists feel unsafe when using the roads, and incidents are common
  • NYC is committed to creating an integrated and mobile community where cyclists feel safe
Northern Boulevard before cycle protection

The challenge: busy boulevard with unsafe cycling conditions and vehicle incursions

Project Objectives

  1. Create a protected cycle route allowing safe segregated travel
  2. Prevent vehicles entering the cycle lane by introducing robust physical segregation between the cycle lane and the road
  3. Ensure the segregation between the cycleway and the road is clearly visible, especially in low-light conditions
  4. Ensure pedestrians can safely cross the cycleway and road from the pavement

Our Solution

  1. Segregate the cycle lane on Northern Blvd using our surface-mounted Narrow Cycle Lane Defenders
  2. Create sections of continuous segregation using our substantial Lane Separators
  3. Both products are kerb height and can incorporate a range of high-visibility bollards
  4. Bespoke reflective bollards were installed to increase visibility, especially at night
  5. Each separator can be installed in a matter of minutes, requiring limited lane closures and allowing continued traffic flow
